Divide and Dissent: Kentucky Politics 1930-1963
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Kentucky (July, 1987)
Average review score:

Great insight into Kentucky Politics. This is a great book for anyone who is interested in the politics of Kentucky. Although the title of the book indicates a focus on the years 1930-1960, it actually starts out with the founding of the State. WARNING: If you are a A.B. "Happy" Chandler fan this might not be the book for you. However, if you are interested in a accurate enjoyable read that focuses on the struggle of Kentucky Politics, I highly recommended this book.

Down the Santa Fe Trail and into Mexico: The Diary of Susan Shelby Magoffin, 1846-1847 (Yale Western Americana Paperbound, Yw-3.)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (December, 1984)
Average review score:

Primary Source tale of a honeymoon on the Santa Fe TrailMagoffin was a name familiar to the Mexicans who had trading relations with Susan's husband for years before he married her and took her with him from the states on an expedition to Chihuahua, Mexico. She kept a diary from which she drew her information for the only book I know written by a woman, young and pregnant, whose fate it was to die in her 26th year, at home. Accounts from her perspective at such a crucial time in relations between the United States and Mexico, in a venacular peculiarly her own, make her work one of considerable importance to the serious student of the time. Revealing also are individual encounters with men, some from her own country, and her opinion of Gen. Stephen Watts Kearny, commander of the U.S. Army of the West stationed in Sante Fe. Susan was a young lady of class the exercise of which makes the reader proud, and whose elegance charmed all who came to know her.

Dreamplace
Published in Hardcover by Orchard Books (March, 1993)
Average review score:

Evocative poetry for children and adultsThis is a beautiful book and will be especially valued by those who have visted Mesa Verde in person. What struck me most about it (in addition to the beautiful illustrations) was that the text, while evoking a child's imagination, is also sophisticated poetry that appeals to an adult sensibility.

Drinking Careers: A Twenty-Five-Year Study of Three Navajo Populations
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (November, 1994)
Average review score:

Myth and Reality in Indian DrinkingLevy and Kunitz have been researching Navajo alcohol use for close to thirty years. In this work, they track the alcohol use of a sample Navajo population across time. Unlike early works that emphasized the similarities between Navajo drinking and Anglo drinking, this work spends much of the time on differences between the two populations. Although Anglos and Navajos in the rural Southwest both have alcoholism rates that are pretty much the same, the experiences individual Navajos have with alcohol over time have not been previously explored in great detail. This multi-generational study mixes scientific language with compelling personal stories to great effect. Levy and Kunitz present compelling evidence that Navajo drinking patterns are significantly different from Anglo drinking patterns. In particular, the Navajo trajectory of heavy male drinking during early adulthood turning into moderate drinking by middle age has interesting comparisons with todays college-age men. The study also does a nice job exploring the relationship of Navajo women with alcohol and finds that female Navajos typically have less problems than men, but for those that do have problems the consequences are much worse.
Although this work will probably only appeal to scholars, those with an interest in Navajo culture should read this work, as well as previous volumes by these authors, to better understand the myths and truths surrounding Navajo drinking.

Early Southwest Ornithologists 1528-1900 (Southwest Center Series)
Published in Hardcover by University of Arizona Press (November, 2001)
Average review score:

For anyone with a keen interest in American Southwest birdsEarly Southwest Ornithologists 1528-1900 by Dan L. Fischer is a fascinating history of the study of birds and the ecology of the American southwest, influenced as the science was by more practical matters such as the Mexican-American War. An expansive bibliography and selection of maps help chart the course of compiled ornithology over the centuries. Overall, Early Southwest Ornithologists 1528-1900 is a fact-filled sourcebook, and very highly recommended reading for anyone with a keen interest in American Southwest birds and those who have studied them.

Edible and Useful Plants of Texas and the Southwest : A Practical Guide
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Press (March, 1999)
Average review score:

Definitive on edible and useful Texas plantsI have been interested in edible plants in Texas since attendng a class this March given by a member of Texas Agricutural Extension Service where we foraged for our lunch after class, in the woods. This book is so extensive, includng recipes (I'm a cook), I found a lot of nutritious. medicinal plants in my backyard's weeds this spring. I was prompted to want to forage more.I would recommend it to everyone who wants more information than just the books for use by campers. I also have Edible Wild Plants by Peterson, which I also like, that has photographs and drawings but is not as extensive as Ms. Tull's book. Texas loss is Alaska's gain!
